Village of Uflistsikhe Faces the Danger of Epidemics

June 30, 2007

UPLISCIXE.gifPopulation of the village of Uflistsikhe in Gori District still faces the danger of epidemics. The problem originated from the canalization system which is out-of-order. In summer, after permanent rains, excrement leaks out of the overfull canalization system and reaches the yards and wells of the villagers.

There are ten communal buildings in the village of Uflistsikhe and they have common canalization system. The system is in disorder and the villagers cannot afford to repair it.

Last year, the Human Rights Center was seriously concerned regarding the situation and revealed the problem in its article. 60% of the children living in the area got ill with intestine diseases.

Last year, representatives of the local authority promised villagers their assistance; they were going to apportion some money to resolve the problem. However, there is no money envisaged in the current budget for the purpose.

The population urges for help.

“We cannot stand it anymore. The excrements reach our yards and wells. In the heat there is terrible smell in and out of our houses. Representatives of the local authority have been promising us the assistance for two years already but nothing has changed yet,” said Mzia Kurdgelashvili.

“Last year, the society learned about our problem from your center. Representatives of the Health Center arrived here as well as from the District Administrative Board and the Regional Board. They promised their assistance. Representative of the Health Center (the respondent means Ia Berianidze, the head of the center) started to blame us. She rebuked us for having attracted public attention to our problem because she said they could resolve it without additional fuss. However, now we have to apply to your center again. We are ashamed to receive a guest at home; there is terrible smell in and outside the house. Last year my child got ill with intestine disease and he was treated in Tbilisi. The situation is still urgent,” said Rezo Krushvili.

Otar Stefanishvili said that they have got tired of sending petitions to the Gubernator and the Governor.  “When we petitioned to the Governor and Gubernator, they replied that they had no funds and would start repair-works next year. However they have not done anything. They sent paints two weeks later and ordered to paint gates, walls and fences. They have made the facades of the houses beautiful but there is terrible smell behind our houses,” said Stefanishvili.
