Government Do not Aid to Temporary Residents of Liakhvi Valley

March 23, 2009

Tea Tedliashvili, Gori

The residents who lived in the villages of Liakhvi valley temporarily are not aided from the government yet. The government distributed about 10 000 USD only to the permanent inhabitants of the Liakhvi valley. However there are a lot of families, so called “holiday-makers”, who had their houses and small plots there where received some harvest; the harvest used to be the source of their income.

Vazha Kekelishvili had his estate in Kheiti, but nobody has assisted him yet.

Vazha Kekelishvili’s brother Davit Kekelishvili was deputy of Mikheil Kareli, former governor of Shida Kartli Region; so the family supposes the government does not aid them for this reason.

“I do not insist on assisting me immediately; we have another house where we can live now, we used the house in Kheiti as a summer-cottage. I only ask for being registered. I personally visited Badri Basishvili, single mandate candidate from Liakhvi Valley, who sent me to Arkadi Datashvili. They did not pay any attention to me; and the reason for their negligence is former position of my brother who was deputy regional governor”, said Vazha Kekelishvili.

According to the officials, first of all homeless people will be compensated. However, they do not know yet when the compensations will be issued to those people who owned houses in the valley but did not live there. “These compensations are for those who are seeking for shelter, for homeless people. The 95 per cent of such people have already been satisfied. The compensations for properties will not be distributed yet. When this process begins, we will issue such compensations to temporary residents. A lot of people belong to this category. “As for the family of Kekelishvili, you have mentioned, I do not know him, he has not been here “, said Arkadi Datashvili the head of the Kurta Municipality office. It should be pointed out; that Arkadi Datashvili draws up lists of the people who should be compensated. Although the family of Kekelishvili does not live in Kheiti, they possess land there, which was main source of their income.

Several people with similar problems have already visited Gori office of the Human Rights Center office. The government refuses to assist them because they are “holidaymakers”; however nobody tells them when the “holidaymakers” will be compensated for their lost estates.
