June 11, 2010
The USA considers that situation in Georgia and poor democracy in Russia is failure of the US foreign policy.

McFaul talked about the importance of the restart of relations with Russia before Medvedev’s visit to the USA.

According to McFaul, the aim of the USA is to promote peaceful resolution of conflict between Russia and Georgia, and restoration of territorial integrity of Georgia, as well as strengthening of stability and democracy in Georgia.

“It is absolute true. It is our aim. Though we have other plans in regard with Georgia. We want to reinforce stability in Georgia and in entire region; reinforcement of democracy and economical improvement in Georgia. We work on these directions simultaneously.”

Besides, Michael McFaul said the US efforts had not yielded any significant results yet.
“Have we succeeded in the implementation of our main goals? I think – No, we have not. We have goals, strategy which are being implemented and we will discuss these issues with the President Medvedev. However, as for the question whether we have achieved any success in the reinforcement of the independence of Georgia, our reply is negative,” said the US official.

Despite that, he sees both positive and negative moments in the activities of the Russian government. McFaul positively assesses sudden election of several mayors and adoption of the laws against the corruption.

“In the north Caucasus, the level of violence increases, more people are imprisoned. Media – particularly television – is controlled. Is there any connection between new policy and democracy what is going on in Russia? I cannot make final conclusions about it,” said McFaul.
