Water Utility ,,Mtkvari-em” Blocked Irrigation System during -Droughts

July 22, 2010
 Saba Tsitsikasvili, Gori

For a period two weeks the villages of the Gori district, Khidistavi, Uflistsikhe , Kvakhvreli and Doesi were blocked from using an irrigation system from the water company ,,Mtkvari-em”.  The head of  ,,Mtkvari-em” says that in this period there was no- water.

After the Human Rights Center’s office in Gori spread this information, the company promptly provided the village with water.
Giorgi Miruashvili from the village of Kvakhvreli said - ” At that period of time it is like a crime to stop providing village with water. There was no water for two weeks during the droughts. ,,Mtkvari-em”- stopped providing the village with water as if we didn’t pay new taxes.”

Davit Mechitishvili, the head of Gori Hydro Management Association confirmed that ,,Mtkvari-em” blocked the  irrigation system for two weeks”.
,, I had quite a significant discussion with them and I would like to say that for me their position is unacceptable. They ask customers to pay one GEL for one hundredth and officially the rate should be  0, 75 GEL for one hundredth.” said- David Mechitishvili.

We contacted Davit Mujurishvili- the head of ,,Mtkvari-em” and he denied the  fact that the irrigation system was blocked for the village on the left side of Mtkvari.

“In those villages the level of the local river fluctuates frequently.  At that period of time the level of the river was significantly lower and accordingly less water flowed into the canal.  That is the reason why villages didn’t have water.” said- Davit Mukhirishvili.

Despite this statement, Davit Mujirishvili still has no answer for why the villages have water in spite of the river continuing to remain at a low level.
