Sozar Subari, Public Defender of Georgia Addresses Nino Burjanadze, Chairperson of Parliament

March 14, 2008

The quote from Public Defener’s address:

’’ The situation is turning out to be extraordinary when MPs hunger strike and when one considers that only this extreme form of protest will enable them to achieve their goals. Based on humantaritan principls, we must all  demonstrate meekness towards the hunger strikers, and this position should be regardless of what are  our political atitudes towards the action itself.

Yesterday I visited starving MPs in your lobby and it turned out that they were not even allowed to have blankets in the lobby to cover them at night. Therefore, starvation is now accompanied by having to face unbearable cold. I call upon you to allow the hunger strikers to have blankets as a mimimum and that some basic human conditions be afforeded them.“

The Public Defender now plans to meet with head of the parliament over the issue of  hunger strikers’ conditions.
