Human Rights Summer School

 Program Description

10-16 July, 2015, Tbilisi, Georgia

Human Rights Summer School is a 7-day educational program, which aims to equip young people from different regions of Georgia with basic knowledge on human rights and experience of local leading human right defenders and experts. Formal trainings and thematic lectures will be organized. 
 
The participants will get basic knowledge on human rights, importance of democratic development, peaceful transformation of conflicts and civil activism. 

The program is divided into 4 main modules:

Fundamentals of human Rights: Participants of Summer School will learn the main principles of human rights, including the rights of minorities; also the importance of social welfare, peace, equality and anti discriminatory approach to democratic development of society. The module includes principles of national and international laws on human rights and protection mechanisms like Ombudsmen Office; also watchdog and human rights activities of civil society organizations.
 
Civil Activism and Human Rights: The participants will receive information about the importance of civil activism in human rights protection. The module covers different forms of civil activism and allows the participants to discuss and properly choose their role in democratic development.
 
Conflict Sensitivity: The participants will get information on diversity, tolerance, minority rights and also about the tools of conflict prevention.
 
Seminars and Discussions: Includes issues of minorities, children, women rights and gender. Well-known Georgian human right defenders, experts and representatives of Public Defender’s office will hold seminars on the rights of internally displaced persons, on tolerance and discrimination.
 
Specific examples will be discussed during the seminars, which will help students to properly understand the facts of human right violation and violence in their own communities. 

The project is implemented by the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia and Human Rights Center. Funding for the project is provided by High Commissioner on National Minorities of Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE HCNM);
 
Participants:

15-20 year old teenagers from following regions of Georgia: Shida Kartli, Samegrelo, occupied districts of Gali and Akhalgori; also from the regions populated with minorities: Samtskhe –Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli.
 
Working language: Georgian
