Illegally Seized Gifts from Gonio Residents
Plots were seized from 272 families in theGonio
community. The local authority explained the decision by referencing
the law, which forbids settlement close to the cultural monument –
Gonio Fortress in this particular case. However, as it was cleared up,
only two plots were assigned in contradiction to this law in Gonio.

Scheme of Trade Redistribution in Gori
Jemal Tsiklauri owned an agricultural market in Gori
until 2004. The state registered his market under their ownership while
Tsiklauri was serving prison time for cheating on the price of 9 kilos
of meat despite the fact that it was one of the sellers who cheated,
not him. Despite this, a criminal case has been filed against
Tsiklauri, holding him responsible.

Dispersal Of Georgian War Veterans' Protest Widely Criticized
The dispersal and arrest by police on January 3 of
former servicemen who staged a public protest in Tbilisi against the
abolition of social benefits to which they were previously entitled has
been widely condemned by Georgian opposition parties and NGOs,
including the Georgian Young Lawyers Association, human rights defender
Giorgi Tughushi, and the U.S. ambassador.

Attempted Exemplary Punishment
The Gurjaani District Prosecutor’s office has finished
its investigation into the case of Zurab Tabagari - former director of
the public school in Balghojiani Village, Kvareli District. The
prosecutor’s office accused Tabagari under Article 139 (forcible sexual
intercourse with juvenile) and Article 332 (abuse of power) of the
Criminal Code of Georgia.

Obscure Transport Collapse in Tbilisi
The optimization of urban transportation causes transport collapse in
Tbilisi. The overburdened municipal buses, prolonged waiting for the
desired transportation at the bus stops and the risen prices for
travelling is today’s reality in Tbilisi. Tbilisi residents have not
seen this kind of situation since 90s when because of the oil
deficiency buses could not work and people would ride on top of the
trolley buses to reach the destination.

New Tax Code – New Regulation for Businessmen
The government met the New Year with the new Tax Code.
The new Tax Code contains new notions together with new tax systems.
The notions of “micro” and “small business” were introduced in the Code
for the first time. The tax payment is also differentiated for them.
Tax ombudsman (business ombudsman) was appointed who has not made any
comments about mass detention and fining of entrepreneurs so far.

Three Businessmen Committed Suicide in Kakheti in 2010
Otar Piranishvili, one of the owners of the wine company
“Shumi,” Paata Papalashvili, one of the owners of the wholesale store
“Delpini” and Archil Sesiashvili, the deputy director of “Kindzmarauli
Marani” committed suicide. In all three cases the reason of suicide was
named to be the inspection carried out by Tax Inspection.
