The Trial about Raiding Journalists Was Cancelled at the Sighnagi Regional Court

May 19, 2009

Khvicha Kikilashvili, judge of Sighnagi Regional Court, postponed the trial about raiding the journalists, which was fixed on May 18.

Nineli Khaniashvili, lawyer of Ioseb Nanobashvili, told the court that the person she was defending was ill.

“The judge has postponed the trial today because the journalists were going to hold a demonstration in front of the court building. The court has not been discussing the case of raiding the journalists for 3 years. In spite of our demands, judge Kikilashvili did not let us find out the case so far. He is only threatening that he would catch and arrest us if we said anything. It is impossible to protect your own rights in such situation. We demanded another judge, but he wanted to hold the trial himself, not to make problems to MP. The journalists were raided by the order of Nugzar Abulashvili”. The Human Rights Center cited the words of journalist Gela Mtivlishvili who was injured during this raid (Gela Mtivlishvili is also a regional cooperator of the Human Rights Center).

According to Nana Vasadze, head of press service of Georgian Supreme Court, the court did not hold the trial about raiding the journalists because he had to hold many trials.
