Pikria Chikhradze: Independent Journalists Are Absolutely Unprotected in Regions

August 11, 2009

Accroding to Pikria Chikhradaze, one of the leaders of the party New Rights, independent journalists who work in the regions are absolutely unprotected.

Piksria Chikhradze said that after the new rights party had had meetings with the representatives of the regional media she became sure that those journalists are not protected.

“Recently we have met journalists and editors of regional mass media in several regions of Georgia. So I can say that the regional media is very competent, but  independent journalists who criticize the policy of the government are absolutely unprotected. In Tbilisi   by various means it is possible to protect journalists from policital pressure and prevent violations against them. i. There are more methods to oppress the journalists in the regions and some of the facts of the political pressure are concealed. For instance, the representatives of Kakheti Government believe they have the right to intervene in the activities of the regional media and control the journalists”, noted Pikria Chikhradze.
