Tbilisi City Hall Will Publish Secret Project of Rike in Several Days

Tbilisi City Hall plans to present project of the Rike (embankment) of the capital in several days which had been in secret so far. The city authority does not speak about the project yet though according to the news agency “Pirveli” they plan to turn the embankment into recreation zone and arrange culture center there; they plan to build Glass Bridge on the River Mtkvari for walkers. The bridge will link the Rike with the right embankment of the river.

There are many unanswered questions about the ongoing construction in Rike. The area is surrounded with iron fence and there is a slogan on the board: “I Love Tbilisi” which generally represents ongoing construction activities in the capital. According to the law, the sign-board should provide information about the starting and final dates of the construction and other concrete information as well. This requirement of the law is completely neglected. It is unclear who ordered to start the construction and who implements it. Officially it is known that it is rehabilitation project of Rike.

After the dispute started about the issue, on December 4 they put up a sing-board of the glass-bridge too. It must be noted that similar project was not envisaged in the 2009 budget of the capital. Later it was inserted in the rehabilitation program of the Old Tbilisi. However, it is unclear what kind of activities will be funded by the City Hall.

According to the “Pirveli”, entertaining center is a next business-project of the brothers Koduas in Rike. According to the spread information, they own casino “Sakartvelo”, network of shops in the center of Tbilisi, air-company “Sky Georgia”, “Lilo City”, former “Pirimze” and other entities.

On December 4, public movement “Why” intends to hold demonstration to protest the construction in Rike. One of the founders of the movement Merab Chikashvili reported to the “Pirveli” that he had got hold of several models of the construction and they will be presented at the press-conference tomorrow.

According to Chikashvili, the construction contradicts every article of the law on construction and publishing the project after the construction was started is also a crime. Besides that, historical part of Tbilisi will be damaged as a result of the construction because glass-bridge will not suit architecture of the surrounding territory of Metekhi Church.
