Russia Requests to Defend “Property Rights” of its Citizens in Abkhazia

February 4, 2010

Scandal is developing between Moscow and Sokhumi as it was reported by newspaper “Moskovski Komsomoletsi”.

According to the newspaper, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia has already sent note to Sokhumi de-facto regime where “Russia complained about numerous violations of property rights of Russian citizens.”

According to Abkhazian lawyer Tamaz Ketsba, there are hundreds of facts of confiscation of private properties. “I am studying 30 cases. Russian Embassy named 4000 cases of illegal confiscation,” said Ketsba.

According to the newspaper, only Abkhazian citizens can purchase real estate in Abkhazia under Abkhazian law. Russian citizens have to take part in various suspicious operations to purchase real estate.
“Russians turned up in completely unprotected situation. It is not easy to make Abkhazian person angry and misappropriate his property, because numerous relatives stand behind him. Nobody protects Russians there,” said lawyer Ketsba.
