Director of Public School #149 on Strike

December 16, 2010
Director of the Tbilisi Public School # 149 Maia Giorgadze and her attorney request to study all those documents based of which the minister of education fired her.

Attorney Revaz Rizhamadze raised the question at the session of the Tutorial Council of the Public School # 149. He said they do not agree with the conclusion and arguments of the general inspection of the Ministry of Education which became the basis for the minister’s decree to the Tutorial Council to discuss the dismissal of the school director.

The attorney said that in order to create normal working environment for the Tutorial Council and to allow them to pass unbiased conclusions, more documents shall be studied. First of all, Revaz Rizhamadze requests the General Inspection of the Ministry to provide them with all materials they have studied. Besides that, they provided the accountancy documents and 2008-2010 documents of State Purchase Agency, which deal with the Public School # 149, as evidence.

It was announced at the session of the Tutorial Council that the school director Maia Giorgadze went on strike. She still keeps her position as a school director but she is not going to implement her responsibilities as a director in protest. The attorney said his client started protest because of the oppression and threats against her. Maia Giorgadze alleges that officials of the ministry of education have been blackmailing her since the beginning of November when the pupils of the 12th grade participated in the protest rallies.

The Tutorial Council supported the solicitations of the attorney. So, they will discuss the decree of the Minister Dimitry Shashkin on the dismissal of the school director only after the requests of the attorney are satisfied.
