Attorney Hopes Kakha Chakvetadze Is Soon Released

December 21, 2010

Zurab Nepardze - the attorney of the political prisoner Kakha (Zaza) Chakvetadze said in his conversation with the Human Rights Center that his client will be released in near future.

Deputy Head of the party control service of the National Forum Kakha Chakvetadze was detained during the protest rally of the traders of the Ltd Elsavako market place in Lilo on October 21. He was accused in the resistance to police officers. Soon, the Tbilisi City Court will discuss his case.

The attorney clarified that on December 16 at the preparatory session of the Tbilisi City Court the parties provided their evidence. “We managed to get hold of more evidence than the prosecutor’s office could. So, I am sure Chakvetadze will be soon released,” said the attorney.

Zurab Neparidze said that the defense side provided the testimonies of about 20 witnesses – journalists and cameramen of the TV-Companies Maestro, Kavkasia and ITV.ge as well as testimonies of the rally participants and video-materials.

The video-recordings prove that Chakvetadze did not resist the police officers; he did not even insult them. Besides, the defense side documented that security service had not signed agreement with the Elsavako Ltd yet.

“According to the agreement, the security guards could implement their responsibilities since November 1. So, at that moment, those people were ordinary citizens and did not have right to act against the rally participants.”

Kakha Chakvetadze is blamed in the resistance to the police officers. The prosecutor alleges that the member of the National Forum bit the hand of a police officer.

“Since there is no expertise conclusion to prove the fact of biting, the information without corresponding proofs cannot become evidence during court hearing,” said the attorney.
