The Human Rights Center Requests Dismissal of School Teacher

April 26, 2011
Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti

The Human Rights Center requests dismissal of Nunu Iremashvili, math teacher, from the Vazisubani public school. According to the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center the teacher hit a 5th-grade pupil against the wall and desk.

The ministry of education and law enforcement agencies did not get interested in the incident in public school of Vazisubani village. The TV-companies prepared telecasts on the fact though did not air because Nunu Iremashvili is a cousin of Kakheti regional governor Giorgi Ghviniashvili.

The Human Rights Center requests to launch investigation on the fact. The organization has already appealed to the Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office.

The incident occurred on April 18. The mentor of the fifth grade Nunu Iremashvili entered the classroom when pupils had lesson of natural science. The witnesses said Nunu Iremashvili beat Luka in the classroom in the presence of Tsitsino Solomnishvili, teacher of natural science. Luka’s classmates said the teacher did not stop Nunu Iremashvili to beat the pupil. Tsitsino Solomnishvili does not comment on the incident.

We interviewed 8 classmates of Luka and all of them confirmed that math teacher Nunu Iremashvili, who is their mentor too, really abused Luka.

“A woman lives near the school; her name is Nato. People say she has a big knife and we are afraid of her. Luka annoyed that woman; she came to our school and entered our classroom together with the director. Although Luka apologized to her, our mentor beat him.”

“She hit him against the wall. She is wearing a ring on her finger and beat him with that ring in the head and face. She was shouting at Luka “how did you dare to behave badly?” Luka urged her not to beat him but she continued shouting: “don’t make me angrier or I will take off my shoe and beat you with the heel.”

“She is beating us all the time. In addition, she warns us against telling our parents about it or she would not give us proper marks.”

“Short time ago, she beat our classmate Sergi so ruthlessly that his nose started bleeding; they hardly stopped bleeding.”

Darejan Iaganashvili, the mother of Luka Iaganashvili: “Luka annoyed the woman living next to the school on Friday. On the same evening I was noted I had to go to school. I went there on Monday. The second lesson had already started and met the class-mentor of my son Nunu Iremashvili; she told me about bad behavior of my son and I apologized to her. I met both the woman and the school director and apologized to them. However, I did not know that they had already beaten my son. I learned about it from my relative that evening. We, the family members, decided not to forgive the teacher about this incident. The journalists from TV-Companies Imedi, Rustavi 2 and Public Broadcasting Company arrived here on Tuesday. They recorded and interviewed several people at school but did not release it on TV. I know why they blocked the information. We were also suggested to stop complaining because Nunu has an influential supporter and we cannot oppose her. So, we gave up complaining.”

We could not get in touch with Nunu Iremashvili. We arrived at her house but could not find her there. We met her sister Aniko Iremashvili who is a specialist at the territorial entity of Vazisubani village.

“What are you speaking about?! You have invented some story. My sister and I have never abused a person and how could she beat a child. I swear by Giorgi.”

-Who is Giorgi?

-Don’t pretend that you do not know who he is. How can we insult him with our bad behavior?”

It is easy to guess that Aniko Iremashvili swore by Kakheti regional governor Giorgi Ghviniashvili.

Representatives of the Gurjaani district education center said they studied the incident and found out that it was groundless alarm. The information was not proved.

The officials of the resource center did not meet the victim child, his parents and his classmates.
