Social Allowance Granted to Five-Member Family of Rekhviashvilis

May 11, 2011

Social Agency granted social allowance to the five-member family of Rekhviashvilis residing in Kalkva village in Lagodekhi district. The spokesperson of the Social Agency Eka Alavidze told the Information Center of Kakheti that the family will receive the allowance from July.

She added the family will receive allowance for eight members. The youngest child, less than year, was involved in the Program for Child’s Care. In the framework of the program the infant will get 80 GEL for food monthly till he gets 3 years old.

The Rekhviashvilis are extremely impoverished people. Despite that, the family lost allowance in 2010 and the Agency clarified that Shorena Otiashvili, the mother, worked at the LagodekhAutoGas Company; though she has never worked there.

In March of 2011 Shorena Rekhviashvili applied to the Center of Civil Activities for help. Shorena Rekhviashvili said her 7-month-old infant died several years ago because of extreme poverty; they are very poor now and very often she feeds her 5 children with bran. The only income for the family is 80 GEL – a pension of the grandmother.

Center for Civil Activities is implementing project “Advocacy of People below Poverty Level in Kakheti Region” with the support of the EWMI. In the framework of the project, lawyers provided Shorena Rekhviashvili with legal aid and as a result the Social Agency repeatedly examined their family. Besides that, after the Information Center of Kakheti published a photo-reportage about the family, Lagodekhi district administration assisted the family with 200 GEL. Users of the Tbilisi Forum assisted the family with food products.

After the ICK spread information about the Rekhviashvilis, an international organization got interested in their fate and studies the real reasons for stopping the allowance for the family and lawfulness of the agency’s activities with regard to the family.
