Poet from Akhmeta Sues Singers and Beer Company “Kazbegi” for Breached Copyrights

August 29, 2011

Resident of Shakhvetila village in Akhmeta district Elguja Udzilauri sues Georgian singers in breaching his copyrights. Udzilauri told the Information Center of Kakheti that singers sing songs on his rhymes and publish discs with those songs without mentioning the text-author at all.

“TV-Channels show advertisements of the Beer Kazbegi with the song whose text and melody belongs to me. Singer Giorgi Chitauri gave the song to the company without asking my permission and sings it as if his own song. They sing my songs and breach my copyrights on them as well. Singer Merab Kashia sings my song “Your Eyes Blue as Sky in Shatili” and has it recorded on his disk too. Giorgi Lazviashvili has also recorded my two songs on his discs and sings them in restaurants. Now, you can hear my songs in cars and in houses but nobody mentions my name as author of those songs,” Elguja Udzilauri told the ICK.

He said the chorus of the Tbilisi State University “Gordela” also sings his songs.

Elguja Udzilauri has already petitioned to the Georgian Association for Copyrights. He said the Association promised to assist him.
