Useless Over-Ground Passages

November 1, 2011

Palitra.tv’s footage was made in the central district of Tbilisi where more people walk in the street than cars drive there. Similar risk often ends up with the tragedy. The last accident happened on October 31; car crashed a woman, 40, who died on the place.

Another accident occurred a short time ago: a student, 19, was crashed by a car when crossing the street. He also died on the place. Both accidents happened several meters away from the over-ground bridge.

Why people choose the dangerous route? Palitra.tv asked this question to several passengers.

There are 37 iron over-ground bridges and dozens of underground passages in Tbilisi. Mostly people do not climb up the bridge; they allege the over-ground bridges are not comfortable.

Disabled people cannot climb up the bridges either – none of 37 bridges in the capital has corresponding construction for the movement of disabled people.

Palitra.tv got interested in the issue several months ago too. People are waiting for the over-ground passages for a long time in several districts; however the district governors only give promises and they can cross the street only vie dirty underground passages.

The Tbilisi City Hall representatives agreed that the problem is urgent but refused to make comments.
