Mothers of Under-age Children to Go on Hunger-Strike in the Custody

January 30, 2012

On January 30, convicted mothers of underage children will start a hunger-strike in the Women’s Prison. Human rights defender Nana Kakabadze informed the news agency “Pirveli” about it.

According to her, prisoners – Izolda Kvelidze, Tamila Bartaia, Elene Tushishvili, Seda Sogomonyan and Ia Khvichia are going on hunger-strike; their children are under 3 and the prison administration intends to place them in the orphanage.

Kakabadze said the convicted women can have their children under 3 in the custody and afterwards the prison administration makes decision on placement of the children in corresponding institution.

According to Kakabadze, in abovementioned cases the children do not have families [but their mothers] and they might be placed in orphanage; the convicted mothers protest this fact.
