Sixth Attack on Ankvab

February 22, 2012

Different information is spread about the number of casualties during the attack on de-facto president of Abkhazia Aleksander Ankvab. A short time ago, the news agency Apsni Press reported that two guard members were killed in the attack. Later, the news agencies reported only about one killed person.

According to the de-facto MIA, Aleksandre Ankvab’s car and cortege was attacked on Gudauta-Sokhumi Road at 8:30 am on February 22, 2012. Initially, a landmine was exploded and then a fire was opened from the bombers and automatic guns from the nearby mountain at Ankvab’s car. The driver managed to escape the fire-line. Ankvab was not wounded but two members of his personal guard were badly wounded.

By midday, Ankvab was already in his office in Sokhumi and confirmed the information that he was not wounded.

Investigative-operative team arrived at the scene of accident. De-facto Minister of Interior Otar Khetsia and de-facto prosecutor general Saparbei Mikanba also arrived at the place. Specialists try to indentify the power of the explosive mechanism.

According to de-facto law enforcement bodies, the perpetrators sheltered the mountains and military aircrafts are searching them.

It was the sixth assault on Aleksandre Ankvab; none of them have been resolved yet. First attack occurred in 2005 and Ankvab was slightly wounded two times.
