Tsotne Gamsakhurdia released from prison

October 25, 2012

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia, son of the first president, was released from prison. According to Gamsakhurdia's lawyer Keti Bekauri, President Mikheil Saakashvili pardoned Gamsakhurdia at the request of the Patriarch.

According to the lawyer, the Patriarch petitioned to the President on September 28 and solicited for Gamsakhurdia’s release because of his poor health condition.

Mikheil Saakashvili satisfied the patriarch’s solicitation yesterday and late at night Gamsakhurdia left prison. Gamsakhurdia claims he will request review of his case by relevant agencies.

“I will request to repeatedly study those audio-recordings which are related with the events of November 7, 2007 on which trial has not been held yet because there was no evidence on it,” Gamsakhurdia said.

Gamsakhurdia was arrested on the charge of illegal possession of a weapon and an attempted murder on October 27, 2009. He was sentenced to 13-year imprisonment. In addition, he was accused of ties with Russian special services.
