One more citizen of Georgia, Vakha Bugiev, 39, was killed in Syria; he fought on the side of ISIS. Attorney of district governor in Duisi village Tamar Margoshvili said Bugiev went to Syria in 2015.

“It is impossible to bring his body here. He had a wife and three kids. He took his wife to Syria for three months and she returned to Georgia a month before Vakha’s death,” Tamar Margoshvili said.

Margoshvili said Vakha Bugiev died during air attacks. Another young man from Birkiani village, Pankisi Gorge was wounded during military operations.
According to the village attorney, nobody has gone to Syria from the Gorge since the Counter-Terrorist Center of the Georgian State Security Service arrested Davit Borchashvili.

“Recently, young men stopped migration to Syria; I have not heard anybody has left for Syria after Borchashvili was arrested. People are also fed up with this story,” the attorney said.

Vakha Bugiev was ethnic Chechen; he arrived in Georgia from Azerbaijan in 2000 and stayed here with refugee status for 1 year.

As locals say, 15 young men from Pankisi Gorge were killed in Syria on the side of ISIS.

In March 2016, US Defense Department spread information about the death of Tarkhan Batirashvili, one of the leaders of Islam State; he is from Pankisi Gorge and is known as Abu Omar Al Shishani. The information about his death was not officially confirmed. As locals say Batirashvili is safe and alive.
