Human Rights Center Requests Timely Investigation into Alleged Abuse of Power by Police Officers

April 18, 2018

Tomorrow, on April 19, at 10:30 am, the lawyers of Human Rights Center will hold press-conference about the abuse of power by police officers in the conference hall of Human Rights House Tbilisi.

HRC requests effective and timely investigation into the physical assault of T.B, K.Sh, N.A and K.Kh from the side of police officers during their detention on January 13, 2016.

Samtskhe-Javakheti regional prosecutor’s office started investigation into alleged abuse of power by the police officers of the Samtskhe-Javakheti police department of the MIA.

The incident happened on January 13, 2016 in Akhaltsikhe, when law enforcement officers broke into house of K.Kh through violating lawful procedures and used inadequate power against T.B, K.Sh, N.A and K.Kh. They physically abused underage child of K.Kh.

The police officers verbally and physically abused the detainees. Their beating and torture continued in the police unit too. The police officers wanted to obtain their confession statements as a result of torture and finally achieved their goal.

When the detainees were delivered to the temporary detention setting, the administration refused to accept them because they were ruthlessly beaten; they had injuries on the bodies and due to grave health problems needed medical assistance.

The investigation of the Akhaltsikhe regional prosecutor’s office has been underway for two years already. There is an impression that the investigation tries to support the police officers, who abused power. The victims of harassment still do not have victim status.

Human Rights Center requests to continue timely and effective investigation into the violence act against the detainees on January 13, 2016, to grant victim status to the victims of harassment and punish perpetrators under the law.
