The Ministry of Justice Calls the Charges Made by the Opponents Groundless

16/09/05 “Media News” - The Ministry of Justice of Georgia spread a report about reforms to be held in the Ministry.

The main priority of the Ministry is to correct the situation in the prisons. In 2005, jails were reconstructed, while new prisons are still being built on the territory of Georgia. The financial support - 14 million Georgian lari - was obtained from donor organizations. Also, in 2005 a new, modern jail for women was opened; the work is still on its way in the jails of Rustavi and Kutaisi; also a new prison for underaged prisoners will be opened soon. According to the reforms, the prison’s staff will be elected after detailed examination.

The representatives of the Ministry think that the charges from NGOs and from the Office of Human Rights Defender are more then strange. “The Office of Human Rights Defender and several NGOs, who try to prevent prisoners from torture, spread groundless charges. The investigation done in the Medical Departments showed that moving healthy prisoners from jails to the hospitals was organized by the members of NGOs and by the Office of Human Rights Defender. They were involved in corruption and in law flouting processes,”- said the representative of the Ministry.

With the initiative of the Ministry of Justice, a special committee will be monitoring the work of the Medical Department Commission.
