Statement of Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre (HRIDC)

September 29, 2005

Statement of Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre (HRIDC)

On the 27th of September 2005, the head of the Department for Relations with Georgian Diasporas and Inter-Ethnic Relations at the Georgian President's Office Kvaratskhelia Zaur, had a telephone conversation with the executive director of the HRIDC Ucha Nanuashvili. Kvaratskhelia shouted and hurled insults at the head of the organization and called him an “informer” and “betrayer”. According to Kvaratskhelia, the Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre is spreading false information about ethnic minorities in Georgia and is representing the interests of foreign forces. Kvaratskhelia says that any word about the discrimination of ethnic minorities in Georgia is ridiculous.

The HRIDC is concerned about the recent threats from the governmental representative and thinks that the state is trying to take the activities of the non-governmental sector under control. The HRIDC demands the representatives of government to be answerable for their actions.

Last November the organization received several threats.
