Public Defender Accuses the Government for Dispersing Peaceful Manifestation

October 29, 2007

The Georgian Public Defender Sozar Subari states that the incident which took place on October 28 in Zugdidi exposes the intolerance of the government to peaceful meetings and manifestations.

People dressed in civil clothes assaulted several members of parliament, representatives of NGOs and ordinary people during protest demonstration of the united opposition.

As Sozar Subari stated at the briefing today, he is concerned about the incident. He added that the facts of violence were transmitted by TV and people dressed in civilian clothes were carrying guns; thus he thinks that there were officials among those violators. The policemen looked at the situation very calmly that can be considered as criminal indifference.

The Public Defender recommends the Minister of Internal Affairs Vano Merabishvili and the General Prosecutor Zurab Adeishvili to investigate the facts that took place in Zugdidi and detain every person who participated in the dispersal.

Sozar Subari also demands to punish every law enforcer “who looked at this dispersal with criminal indifference and helped this illegal act to happen” adequately.
