Water is flooding in the basement of the newly restored building of IDPs.

The four storied building of IDPs at #6 Lomuri St has just been restored. The doors and windows have been replaced, the building has been cosmetically repaired, and individual bathrooms have been provided. Even an amusement park for children has been arranged in the yard. The building has been painted in pink, and briefly, we can say that the IDPs were provided with human living conditions. However, there just one little thing that was not considered, and as a result, nearly a half meter of water floods the basement of the renewed building.

The IDPs evicted from the former publishing house “Samshoblo” (homeland) are planning to continue the protest rallies. They are requesting the provision with the residence places. There are approximately 300 families of IDPs in the building. According to Conservative Party member, Lasha Chkhartishvili, only several families of IDPs took the offering of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation – accommodation in Potskho and Oreli. The rest are temporarily residing in the places of their relatives.

One thing is clear – like Gocha Dzasokhov, Leri Khabelov and Arsen Kasabiev, Maia Tsaboshvili-Chigoevi could not live in “revolutionary Georgia.”

“The landslide destroyed my house in the mountainous Adjara region. Here, they settled us in destroyed houses 700 kilometers away from my village. I remember they brought us at night and we could not see anything; there was no electricity. They promised us to shelter into houses with modern reconstruction but my house does not have even a floor; the walls are pulling down. Two days ago the floor broke down and I fell into the basement with my bed; I hardly survived,” said eco-migrant Zhuzhuna Gogitidze who lives in the village of Koreti in Akhmeta district.

The day has been celebrated throughout the world and in Georgia too for 9 years already. “Real People – Real Needs” – it was slogan of the charity events organized by the UNHCR and Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation of Georgia. However, the slogan was not enough and real needs require real sources to be resolved.

Chechen refugees sheltering in Pankisi Gorge blame the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in their discrimination on ethnic grounds. According to the refugees, the UNHCR promised each family to allocate 8-10 thousand USD if they naturalize in Georgia. After this offer, the Chechen refugees declined the refugee status and obtained the citizenship of Georgia; however, the UNHCR did not keep their promises.
Ministry Has Not Resolved Problems of IDPs in Former Military Hospital

Initially, 1 500 IDPs were sheltered in the building of the former Russian military hospital in Isani district in Tbilisi. Nowadays, about 600 IDPs live there. 390 of them are so-called new IDPs (displaced as a result of the war in August of 2008) and 210 so-called old IDPs (displaced during the armed conflicts in 1990s). Although more than one and half year has passed since the August war, the IDPs living in this building have not received an IDP status and single money allowance yet.

Transparency International – Georgia published next report about the cottages of the internally displaced people (IDPs). Besides the living conditions, which are described in the report, it also states that international donor organizations intend to allocate additional funds for the reconstruction of the defected cottages. Supposedly, it will happen after the one-year guarantee of the building companies expires – or when the companies will not be obliged to reconstruct the cottages according to the agreement.

However, the municipality agencies put the conclusion on the shelf. In the morning of March 13, before TV-Company Imedi released simulated Chronicle, the society studying the hypertension level among Georgian population published the results of their research in the IDP settlements. According to the research in Tserovani and Karaleti settlements, more than half of IDPs have high blood pressure, excitement and depression.
