On January 23, victims of natural disaster from Vardisubani village in Telavi district held protest demonstration in the reception of the Telavi district governor. Demonstrators request to insert victimized peasants on the list and to compensate them. They wanted meeting with Telavi district interim governor Zurab Kurashvili but security officers did not allow them into the reception. Employees of the district administration told protesters Kurashvili was not in the office.

Will the Ergneti Market Be Reopened or Not?

Discussion on the reopening of the Ergneti market, which was closed in 2004 in Shida Kartli, has been rekindled in political circles and the society of Georgia for the last few months. Prime Minister Ivanishvili initiated the idea before the parliamentary elections. Public reactions to the idea differed, but everybody admitted that this issue was worth consideration and discussion.

Before the 2010 local governmental elections, the local government of the Lanchkhuti district, the Guria regional governor and the then-majoritarian MP from the Lanchkhuti district repeatedly spoke about the construction of a port in Supsa. The port’s total area was planned to incorporate 180 hectares. An investment of 750 million USD in the project was planned, and the annual circulation of the port was predicted to be 40 million tons.

Keti Gujaraidze, a policy analyst at Green Alternative, said that the construction of HESes will have a negative impact on the environment and that the construction of so many HESes in one region raises many doubts.
