About Georgian Citizenship of Bidzina Ivanishvili and Ekaterine Khvedelidze

Endless speculation from the governmental officials about striping of Georgian citizenships from Bidzina Ivanishvili and his wife Ekaterine Khvedelidze encouraged me to write the following letter. The governmental officials allege the citizenships were stripped of them because of obtaining French Citizenship that contradicted the Constitution of Georgia.

One of the leading Georgian political scientists and a military expert, a former Counselor at the Georgian Mission in NATO, Vakhtang Maisaia was arrested on May 5th 2009 in connection with the “ Mukhrovani Mutiny” with charges in espionage for the Russian Federation. The arrest, court hearings and the case in general had a wide response from the side of the civil society. Charges in high treason and spying where put to doubt by representatives of Georgian NGOs.

We, representatives of the Georgian civil society organizations, who respect democratic values, are concerned for illegal stripping Georgian citizenships from businessman and politician Bidzina Ivanishvili and his wife Ekaterine Khvedelidze. Recent situation demonstrates that the government of Georgia has decided to punish a new political opponent and not to allow him to enjoy his rights under Georgian Constitution and Georgian Law.

Based on Paragraph C of Article 21 of the Law of Georgia on the Public Defender of Georgia, the Public Defender has addressed the Prosecutor General of Georgia with a recommendation to launch investigation into the actions carried out by law enforcers on September 13 and 15, 2011, during the workers’ protest in Kutaisi, and to study the facts of hindering workers from holding the protest, dispersal of the protesters, and their detention by law enforcement officers.

Last night, at 3:00 am, people in civil clothes simultaneously detained famous photo-reporters in their houses; they are: photo-reporter of the European Press-Photo Agency Zurab Kurtsikidze, photo-reporter of the Associated Press Shah Aivazov, personal photographer of the president of Georgia Irakli Gedenidze, his wife - photo-reporter of the Georgian newspaper “Prime-Time” Natia Gedenidze, and photo-reporter of the Foreign Ministry of Georgia Giorgi Abdaladze.
