Public Defender for Liquidation of Prisons

Prevention and monitoring department of the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia finished monitoring of penitentiary institutions in the western Georgia by visiting Batumi Prison # 3 and Zugdidi Prison # 4; the preliminary report of the monitoring was also prepared. The Public Defender of Georgia has been requesting to liquidate those two institutions since 2009.

Political scientist Vakhtang Maisaia was detained in May of 2009 under the charge of espionage. He confessed the crime during the preliminary investigation. However, he did not confess crime during the trial. The court passed 20-years imprisonment sentence against him. He is serving sentence in Rustavi #2 prison.

11 Prisoners Released from Telavi Detention Setting

11 people, detained during the dispersal of the protest demonstration on May 26 in Tbilisi, were released from the Telavi temporary detention setting. Their administrative imprisonment finished at 00:00 am on June 25. Among them is Murman Dumbadze, head of public movement “Serve Georgia” and journalist Aleko Chubinidze.

The prisoner, who was beaten in the custody by prison personnel, is now coping with death. The Human Rights Center’s lawyer Nino Andriashvili said the health conditions of the inmate are extremely grave – he cannot move, he has terrible pains, often faints and has problems with memory.
