Who Controls the TV Companies?

Personnel changes in the Georgian national TV Companies raised many questions among Georgians. The appointment of Giorgi Arveladze as the director general of the TV Company “Imedi” was followed the next day by the resignation of Levan Kubaneishvili as director general of the Public Broadcasting [the “PB”]. The personnel changes started on the same day at Rustavi 2: Irma Nadirashvili replaced Nino Shubladze as head of the news room and Nino Shubladze became the deputy director general of the TV Company. Frontline for the government is now in TV Company Imedi. Hence, Giorgi Arveladze, former Minister of Economic Development of Georgia will control the TV Company. He replaced Giorgi Isakadze on the position of the head of Georgian Media Holding. The personnel of the “Imedi TV” connect the replacement with the upcoming elections.

Kakheti regional newspaper “Imedi” ceased publishing. The editorial board of the newspaper made this decision today. Gela Mtivlishvili, editor of the newspaper “Imedi” stated that private companies and other people have been forbidden to place their advertisements in the newspaper “Imed” under the directions of the Kakheti regional administration for several months already.

Initially policemen tried to resolve the problem among each other and only after that started to interrogate the victim Several days ago, Norwegian journalist Ragnar Skre was attacked by masked people in his flat. The attackers did not demand anything from the journalist – neither money nor other things. The only thing the harassers took from his house is a bag with a photo-camera, Dictaphone and wallet in it. The journalist did not have much money in the wallet, only 60 GEL.

Court Does Not Discuss the Case on Dispersal of Journalists

On June 14, President Mikheil Saakashvili met the parliamentary majority. During the meeting the president reproached law enforcers who prevented journalists from their professional activities and required to protect the rights of journalists. After the president’s speech some officials apologized for having abused journalists and others. The Ministry of Internal Affairs fired three policemen for assaulting the journalists. Although preventing journalists from their professional activities is considered a crime, not a single policeman was charged up to now.

The victimized media-representatives claim that law enforcers targeted on journalists and hunted on them with particular severity in order to destroy the video and photo recordings of the dispersal. Kakheti Cable TV Company Ceased Broadcasting of the Programs of “Maestro TV”

Programs of the TV Company “Maestro” has not been broadcast in Kakheti region for ten days already. Representatives of the cable TV Company located in Akhmeta state that the delay was caused by bad weather and technical problems. In fact, according to our information Kakheti office of the Constitution Security Department demanded them to cease the broadcasting.
